The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained Simply

April 8, 20266 min read

The 4Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — are how diamonds are graded and priced. Understanding them is the difference between overpaying for a mediocre stone and finding a stunning diamond at a fair price. Here's the plain-English version.

Cut (The Most Important C)

Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light — not its shape. A poorly cut diamond looks dull regardless of how big it is. An excellently cut diamond sparkles brilliantly. Cut grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Never go below Very Good.

Color (D-Z Scale)

Diamonds are graded from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow). The difference between D and G is invisible to the naked eye. We recommend G or H for white gold/platinum settings and J for yellow gold (the warm metal hides slight color). Spending up for D-F is rarely worth it.

Clarity (FL to I3)

Clarity measures internal flaws called inclusions. The scale: FL (flawless), IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, I3. The sweet spot is VS1-VS2 or 'eye-clean' SI1 — inclusions invisible without magnification. Paying for VVS or FL is paying for what you can't see.

Carat (Just Weight, Not Size)

Carat is weight, not visual size. A well-cut 1-carat diamond can look bigger than a deeply-cut 1.3-carat. Also: prices jump at full and half-carat marks (1.0, 1.5, 2.0). A 0.95-carat looks identical to a 1.0-carat but costs significantly less.

Where to Spend, Where to Save

Spend on: Cut (always Excellent or Very Good). Save on: Color (G-H), Clarity (VS2 or eye-clean SI1), and consider buying just under the carat thresholds. That's how you get a stunning diamond at a smart price.
